Sundays are so delicious when you know you don't have to work tomorrow. I have plenty of paperwork to keep me busy, but not having to set the alarm tonight more than makes up for it.

For anyone who didn't know, I blog a couple of Sundays a month over at Slash and Burn. Today was my Sunday, and usually I just ramble for a paragraph or two about nothing. But go and read and check out posts from my fellow authors, too. Enjoy your holiday if you have one, guys.

It bugs the crazy-ass shit out of me that so many of my RL friends on Facebook are all fluttery about 50 Shades of Grey.

IF I COULD ONLY TELL THEM.

Now all that was left 'neath the bad-smelling sky
was my big empty factory...

the Lorax...

and I.

The Lorax said nothing. Just gave me a glance...
just gave me a very sad, sad backward glance...
as he lifted himself by the seat of his pants.
And I'll never forget the grim look on his face
when he heisted himself and took leave of this place,
through a hole in the smog without leaving a trace.
And all that the Lorax left here in this mess
was a small pile of rocks, with one word...

UNLESS

Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss. Plz let the record state that The Lorax has been my fave Dr. Seuss story for many years, long long long before they decided to make that horrible looking movie.

I panicked.
Up until a couple of months ago, I'd been going to the same nail salon for over 15 years. The same girls have been doing my fingers and toes forever. Sweet, Vietnamese ladies who are just about my age and we talk about their kids, they know I'm a teacher, I helped out one of them with a credit card issue they were having, blah blee. The salon wasn't anything special and actually didn't keep very up to date on the latest nail techniques because they're smack in the middle of a big senior retirement community and they don't actually need to keep that up to date. Show me a senior citizen who wants a shattered manicure. (Or pedicure, like I currently have.)

So they've been giving me a gel manicure for a while, and the first time it stayed on fine. The second time, it peeled off my nails after a week. The third time, four days. I finally said something about it and my manicurist promised to do a better one. Nope, it peeled in less than a week. At $40 a manicure, I want my nail polish to last, dude. My mom recommended a place she likes, so I gave it a try. It's comparable in price, MUCH closer to my house, and my polish didn't budge from my fingers for a full two weeks. Hooray! I switched over and haven't looked back.

Except my old nail place LOOKED UP MY PHONE NUMBER IN THE PHONE BOOK and called me last night, wanting to know where I was. I've never given them my phone number since they don't ever call to confirm appointments or anything. There was no reason for them to have my number. BUT THEY FOUND IT.

I panicked and lied and said I'd moved. And said I'd try to come in once in a while, even though they aren't close to my new house. Because I am too nice to say "You aren't giving me what I'm paying for and I really like you as people but not as nail technicians." My husband says they're a business and they need to know. I say a white lie never hurt anyone.

BUSTED.

Yummmmm, I have a new short story out. I love this one, because it's boys with tattoos. So delicious.

Ink

Cade Tomlin wants nothing more than to tattoo people. He’s been drawing on himself with markers since he was little, but it can’t compare to the feel of a tattoo machine in his hand. When he finally discovers an artist who is willing to take him on as an apprentice, Cade learns more secrets and details about tattooing than he thought existed. However, his first real client, Kip Parker, teaches him much more about what a meaningful tattoo can say.

It was a beautiful picture. )

Ink available HERE from Torquere Press.

HAHAHA of course LJ has now begun to screw with me, just as payback for me being loyal and giving it my money. I can't post comments anywhere, including my own journal. And I can't even ask if anyone else has this issue, BECAUSE YOU WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO COMMENT AND TELL ME.

I still love you, LJ. Even though you're a fighter, not a lover.

new book!
New release this week! It's a short story for the bargain price of $2.99. A few years ago I wrote Keeping Karma, a novel about a vet tech and an animal control officer. Alex can hear the thoughts of animals, and none so clearly as his ferret Karma. Well, Alex, Dylan, and Karma are all back in Teaching Topaz! This is a sequel to Keeping Karma and revisits Alex and Dylan in their life together. Excerpt under the cut.

He made it home before Dylan's shift ended... )

Teaching Topaz is available HERE, and I'll even give you a coupon code for 15% off! Just put '30days2011' in the coupon code box at checkout before Sunday at midnight to get 15% off your order.

I'm going to a two-year-old's birthday party today. I've never met the child, I have only a passing acquaintance with the parents, and I didn't receive a formal invite. I'm going because I want cake.

Who else would do the same?

So much to hate.
I'm an advertiser's dream. I laugh at funny commercials. I tear up at sad ones. I buy the stuff they're selling. I memorize lines and parrot them back when the ad comes on TV. I sing the jingles. I'm basically their target market, and I'm not ashamed of this fact.

BUT. When a commercial misses the boat with me, I am overcome with an irrational loathing of it.

I come bearing examples. )

Another school year, come and gone. It was a quick one, too. How come they're not all like that? My class was darling and I will miss their little faces. Tonight was Open House. I got to watch 25 sets of parents/grandparents/aunts-uncles/cousins/siblings listen patiently while my students explained about their sand-casted fossils, their dinosaur mobiles, their fossil facts, and their dinosaur sketches. They were delightful.

And my friend Christopher came to see me. <3

"Hello," he said from behind me. I turned around and blinked at him. Same old Chris, just taller. And with a deeper voice, as sixth graders will.
"Chris!" I said, and hugged him.
He hugged back, and not a pretend one that too-cool middle schoolers do to adults. A good hug, with a smile on his face. He looked around. "This place is kind of different now."
"Well, yes. You're not eight any more." I smiled at him.
"Nah. I'm twelve."
"I know. How's middle school?"
"It's kind of okay. Sometimes I miss second grade. Then I hang out with my friends and I forget about it."

We talked for a minute more and I made someone take a picture of us with my phone. I showed it to him.

"That's a nice picture," he mused. "You should keep it."

I plan to.

Two things of note:

1. Yesterday, Disney announced a new race. The Tinker Bell Half Marathon. WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS INFORMATION. I can't even.

2. I spent my afternoon being a Brazilian bikini wax model while my esthetician learned new techniques from the owner of the salon, who waxed me. They discussed my delicate areas. I was totally fine with this.

HOORAY, release #2 for 2011!

My short story Priorities is available HERE from Torquere Press. If you remember Teagan and Cash from their book Tabula Rasa a couple of years ago, they're back in this little look into their life together. Here's the blurb:

Teagan and Cash are back! The two rodeo cowboys from Tory Temple’s popular EPPIE finalist novel, Tabula Rasa, are back with this glimpse into their domestic life.

Teagan is expecting a delivery of new horses to his ranch in Wyoming. He’s counting on Cash to be home from his latest steer roping competition in time to help. But when Cash decides to stay in Tulsa an extra day and Teagan is felled by an unexpected illness, Teagan can’t help questioning his partner’s priorities. Can these two headstrong cowboys come to an agreement about the most important thing in their lives together?

If you haven't read Tabula Rasa, you can get that HERE. Then pick up a copy of Priorities HERE. After you've done that, head on over to my site so you can enter the contest I'm running specifically for people who've bought the book. You can win a $10 gift certificate to Torquere Books, and since Priorities is only $1.99, that's a pretty good deal. :D

Contest runs from today through next Sunday, April 10.

Get your copy of Priorities today!

new book!
OMG YAY.

Almost two years ago, [info]kiernankelly and I realized that we each had pretty detailed knowledge of one of the world's most popular theme parks. From there, a GREAT idea for a book was born. We finally got around to starting it last year. It took a few months, but we finished it together and now it's available!

Ever wonder what goes on between employees behind the scenes at a theme park? Wonder no more. :D Happy World is an inside look at what happens when two amusement park workers get the hots for each other. Here's the blurb from the site:

Kyle Forester likes rules and schedules, and he loves his janitorial job at Happy World. The gigantic theme park has strict regulations that Kyle knows are in place for a reason. After all, life just runs more smoothly when there are rules in effect, and Kyle is going to make sure his new trainee is fully aware of that. They’ll both get along fine, Kyle is sure. Anyone working at Happy World must be a good employee.

Rory Stafford doesn't like policies or regulations. Unfortunately, getting a job at the world's most popular theme park comes with a handbook full of both those things. Rory is pretty sure his new job at Happy World isn't going to work out, especially after he meets his trainer, Kyle Forester. Kyle is definitely a rule-follower and makes no secret of his contempt for Rory's rule-breaking. However, after just a few shifts together, Kyle and Rory discover that they can’t keep their hands off each other. The two of them find themselves on a wild roller coaster ride of heat, emotion, and not-so-hidden lust as Kyle and Rory try to find common ground in the giant hamster ball known as Happy World.

You guys, this was SO MUCH FUN to write. Kiernan has a really amazing sense of humor and she was a dream to work with. I hope we've got a few more novels in our future. Go check it out! Happy World is available in both print and ebook formats.

AVAILABLE HERE.
