Tonight was Open House. I got to watch 25 sets of parents/grandparents/aunts-uncles/cousin
s/siblings listen patiently while my students explained about their sand-casted fossils, their dinosaur mobiles, their fossil facts, and their dinosaur sketches. They were delightful.
And my friend
Christopher came to see me. <3
"Hello," he said from behind me. I turned around and blinked at him. Same old Chris, just taller. And with a deeper voice, as sixth graders will.
"Chris!" I said, and hugged him.
He hugged back, and not a pretend one that too-cool middle schoolers do to adults. A good hug, with a smile on his face. He looked around. "This place is kind of different now."
"Well, yes. You're not eight any more." I smiled at him.
"Nah. I'm twelve."
"I know. How's middle school?"
"It's kind of okay. Sometimes I miss second grade. Then I hang out with my friends and I forget about it."
We talked for a minute more and I made someone take a picture of us with my phone. I showed it to him.
"That's a nice picture," he mused. "You should keep it."
I plan to.
